Drosophila hydei – Golden Strain
Golden Hydei are a large-bodied fruit fly strain, approximately 3x the size of standard melanogaster. Their size makes them suitable for a wider range of feeders, including larger dart frogs, juvenile chameleons, small geckos, and other insectivores that require a bigger prey item.
Key Characteristics
- Size: ~3mm — significantly larger than melanogaster strains
- Flightless: Yes — contained and easy to manage during feeding
- Nutritional profile: High protein, suitable as a staple or supplemental feeder
- Production timeline: Cultures begin producing in approximately 3 weeks at 72°F–80°F
Choose Your Culture
- Fresh — newly started, ideal for timing your feeder rotation
- Producing — actively producing flies, ready to feed immediately
Storage & Care
Keep cultures between 72°F–80°F. Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures above 85°F. Do not refrigerate.
